“This tube, which contains a quantity of mercury and chips of colored glass, is highly evacuated. When the tube is carefully heated over a Bunsen flame, the mercury boils at a low temperature, and the rapidly moving mercury vapor carries with it the particles of glass. These particles move with motions similar to those of gas molecules.”
“The tube, which is made of Pyrex, should be held nearly upright and rotated while in the flame. Heating should be applied gradually and stopped when the mercury boils. When the experiment is over, the tube should be allowed to cool in an upright position, heated end down.”
